How to tell a good stitch file from a bad one

You do not have to be a digitizer to tell whether a stitch file is any good, and you should not have to sew it to find out. There are five checks, they take a minute each, and every one of them has a number rather than an opinion attached. The numbers below come out of our own engine, measured on real marks — not from a manual.

The five checks, and the number for each

Stitches should cross each line rather than run along it — under 5 per cent running along is healthy. Coverage, meaning how many times thread crosses the fabric, belongs between 150 and 250 per cent. Trims on a chest-size badge should number in the tens, not the hundreds. No thread should travel across a hole in a letter, ever, not once. And the same artwork saved as PNG, JPEG and SVG should produce files within 10 per cent of each other.

Too dense is the usual failure, not too thin

Almost everyone expects a bad file to be sparse. It is the opposite. Coverage at 400 per cent is a stiff plate of thread that curls the garment, takes twice as long on the machine and can break needles. Density feels like quality when you read a number and looks like a mistake when you touch the shirt. If one figure on this page is worth memorising, it is the upper end of that range.

The check nobody runs: the same art, twice

Save your logo three ways and put all three through the same tool. If the results differ by more than about a tenth, the tool is not reading your artwork — it is guessing at a picture of it, and you will get a different result every time you come back. This is the single fastest way to tell an engine that understands shapes from one that is tracing pixels.

Why do trims matter in an embroidery file?
Every trim is the machine stopping, cutting and starting again. On one badge a few hundred trims is slow; on a run of two hundred garments it is hours. Tens are normal for a chest-size mark, hundreds mean the path was never planned.
