Embroidery lettering — a name, a word, a date

Most embroidery is not a logo. It is a name on a jacket, a date on a christening blanket, a word on a cap. That does not need a designer and it does not need a digitizer — it needs a typeface that has been built for thread, and a height that the letters can survive.

Letter height is the whole thing

Type is drawn to be read, not to be sewn, and a stroke that looks fine on paper can fall under what a needle can place. A satin needs about 1.0 mm of width. Below roughly 5 mm of letter height most typefaces have strokes thinner than that, and the letters close up or break. Set the height first and choose the face second — not the other way round.

Eleven faces, and you can see them

Each one behaves differently at small sizes: a face with even strokes survives further down than one with thick-and-thin contrast, and a script needs more height than a block. They are on screen, at your height, before you choose — so it is not a name in a list, it is the letters you are actually getting.

Spacing is a stitching decision, not a typographic one

Letters that are correctly spaced on screen can touch once they have thread on them, because a satin adds width to every stroke. The workshop gives you letter spacing and line spacing as their own settings, so you can open them up until the thread has room.

How small can embroidered lettering be?
About 5 mm of letter height for most typefaces, because below that the strokes fall under the 1.0 mm a satin stitch needs. A face with even strokes goes lower than one with thick-and-thin contrast.
Can I put a name on a cap or a jacket?
Yes — type it, pick the height in millimetres, choose a typeface and download the format your machine reads. It is the same stitch file a logo produces, just from letters instead of shapes.
What does embroidery lettering cost?
Here it is $5 a file, flat, however many letters it is. There is no per-letter charge and no account needed.

Lettering is $5 a file, flat, with no account and no subscription. Studio and Shop plans include some each month. You see every stitch at your chosen height before you pay.
